#33 - The Kid Brother (1927)

July 23, 2018

Harold Lloyd is competing in the same ring as Chaplin and Keaton. It's another gag movie. you can see the spectacle element that emerged from having to tell the story entirely visually without sound.

These films of the 20’s that were gag movies did what everyone else did, exaggerate, because no one can hear you. Everything has to be amplified in terms of movement and simplification of story so that the audience can actually follow what’s going on. It’s easy to fall asleep in a silent film without human voices keeping you awake and aware.
