#55 - Limite (1931)

July 23, 2018

This Brazilian feature barely has any dialogue. It uses surreal imagery to create metaphor, but honestly, it was brutally boring. You’re seeing again the trends of foreign directors to challenge convention in this period as the Americans are entrenching themselves in spectacle of sound, the escapist fantasy. However, you are also seeing a divergence between American films that try to keep everything entertaining, active and stimulating and foreign films that can often have highly confusing or completely unexplained plotlines that can bore an audience to death.
