A little late in its placement in history, kind of like Chaplin's City Lights this is a great film made by a silent filmmaker unaccustomed to Sound. Much of the movie is done through intertitles and highly abstract and extremely horrifying imagery. In that sense it is more of a 1920’s film than a 1930’s film in its use of german expressionist style. Vampyr is a classic horror film however and highly imaginative in terms of its technical elements, use of lighting, and double exposure. That being said it does seem a little out of place, historically though, which might explain why it didn’t do as well in this era.
