Again this is another American escapist horror film, completely unreal, completely artificial and heavily reliant on makeup, costumes, and set dressing. This movie isn't nearly as good as Frankenstein or Dracula in that the source material is not very strong. There are lots of preposterous scenarios in this film that cause the movie to be bogged down in overly complex mysteries. Honestly this film is kind of cheesy and ham-fisted in the way of “Bad” hollywood. This is clearly the work of a period that is trying to avoid real issues in the cinema for fear of audience reprisal. Part of what made Frankenstein and Dracula so good despite their escapist filmmaking tendencies is the fact that the stories are based in true psychological and physiological disturbing tendencies in real life. Those stories speak to the inner horrors of mankind through the lens of a monster with make up yet the story's core comes from a place of reality. Escapism while it is artificial does serve a purpose of translating a realistic horror story where the kernel of the story comes from human life and then is covered in layers of makeup and prosthetics to hide that fact. This movie is not built from any real world horror, it is just confusing and convoluted.
