This romantic period piece hits the “love interest” element that was built into the American psyche over the course of the early to mid 1930’s. It piggyback off the success of Queen Christina in a way as a period romance film starring Greta Garbo who is perfect as a “strong woman” who is attractive but also confined to marriage. This film once again exhibits the schizophrenic treatment of women in 1930’s mainstream american culture where on the one hand audiences are seeing strong, sexually liberated and in charge female leading characters who on the other hand must succumb to a man and become married in order to find their own happiness. There is a conflict between giving women independence and having them be subservient to man.
