This was a very flashy, very well done film. The story was actually quite interesting to follow whereas previous Musicals seemed to speed through the dialogue to get to dance sequence after dance sequence. This one was widely credited with having a better storyline overall due to the direction of George Stevens who comes from romantic comedy films rather than musicals. Overall this film felt more human in nature than the show business based musicals of Footlight Parade, 42nd Street or even Top Hate. The dance seemed to be following the story versus the other way around. This film was the last great hit of the Ginger Rogers - Fred Astaire pairing and definitely signaled the peak of musical romantic escapism going into the 1940s.
