This is just a fun, beautiful film that is very captivating in its story and an early sign of the comedy of Billy Wilder and the politics of communism that he would touch on in the 50’s. You get a precursor to the political satires of the 50s that would be dangerous to make. Films are shifting back into reality by tackling these tough to talk about topics such as communism with humor and lightness to plot that allows the audience of the late 1930's to start to be able to digest these heavy stories.
The comedy is what's key to translating the dramatic and social underpinnings of the film. The Soviet officials are comic characters in how quickly they end up wanting to switch over to the West because of the luxuries they can enjoy.
Love is the core element of all of these films. LOVE, Love, love… And the comedy of the representation of the soviet union being this loveless, joyless place is great. Again it's a satirical approach to the topic that would become highly popular in the 1950s.
