#142 - The Lady Eve (1941)

August 23, 2018

This is a great screwball comedy, comedy of remarriage. It is in the same genre as the films of the 30’s, i.e. The Awful Truth and Philadelphia Story. Barbara Stanwyck is amazingly masculine in her role while being feminine at the same time. Henry Fonda is great to watch, although sorely underutilized in this movie. It’s very strange that he was in it. I would have cast Cary Grant or someone more hyper and charismatic to add a more ping pong nature to the back and forth dialogue. Henry Fonda is quite grounded as an actor and honestly absorbs much of the lines thrown at him with a heavier mode of thought. He's not much of a verbal dueler in that sense and this is the sort of movie that needs it.

Definitely a classic for the time. It's very well executed and boldly sexual as you can see from looking at the final scene with him dragging her off to the bedroom.
