#175 - I know Where I’m Going (1945)

August 24, 2018

A very touching and moving film. The ending has you in tears for the notion of requited love. The film stands in the face of the trend of the time for young girls to marry older and wealthy men. It puts forward the belief in true love over practical security but in a way that shows the viewer how unhappy the person would be who chases the money.

The shots are fairly basic except for the very powerful silhouettes along the shoreline and the use of low angle against the scottish highlands.

It’s somewhat simple in nature, but the majesty of it lies in the heart of the story and the pulling back the curtain of the beauty of life against the propped up desire to earn money.

The location in this film is employed beautifully and becomes a character in the film in and of itself.

The Pressburger/Powell team takes a turn with this film by making something more heartfelt than their previous rich, heavily production designed works. This film feels far more simple and human in nature and shows that the team can write people extremely well too in addition to spectacle.
