#207 - The Red Shoes (1948)

December 12, 2018

A brilliant film that makes excellent use of color. The photography and staging of the film is incredible. The choreography of the dancers is great. This movie helped influence grandiose filmmaking by showing the possibilities of color used in an extravagant and narratively justified sense. This movie also demonstrated the ability to highlight thematic elements of the story through color and staging. The use of red in particular moments highlights the insanity and passion of the main character.

This is a film that helps lay the ground for Spielberg. It lays the ground for Kubrick too. Powell and Pressburger set the standard for high art filmmaking in the latter half of the twentieth century. Commercial Filmmakers owe a great deal to these guys for pushing the medium in this direction. The pair are literally leaning on the camera, pushing it out, showing more, and also utilizing aesthetics in composition.
