#187 - The Big Sleep (1946)

August 25, 2018

I have to say this movie is pretty fucking weird and incomprehensible. The script is all over the place and the story is more confusing that it needs to be. This film is a classic Film Noir but is also has classic Film Noir problems in my opinion, such as overused flashbacks, scrambled story structure that is unnecessarily confusing, intense chiaroscuro lighting and use of shining lights through shades and a Femme Fatale. Bogie is interesting in this movie and so is Bacall but the movie makes very little sense. The action is packed and it’s in the vein of the anti-hero but the movie does not pull through. That's it. It's all style over substance.

I understand people like this film and consider it a classic but I had a hard time enjoying it because the story was all over the place.
