#200 - Force of Evil (1948)

August 25, 2018

A very captivating film and story. The shooting isn’t too outlandish or ridiculous but is very spot on in terms of focusing your attention on what you need to see to understand the story and the character changes. At times it takes a step back to look at a nice wide shot that aesthetically and metaphorically shows the narrative moment, i.e. the wide shot of the stairs as he steps down.

This film is part of the turn in who a protagonist is in moral terms. Again the protagonist is also the villain in this film, that's part of the film noir trope.

You can see the link between this film and Goodfellas and Raging Bull, the emphasis on conflict from external criminal enterprising with the intention to do good unintentionally spilling into the home and causing the killing, arrest and ruining of family member’s lives.
