A Trip to the Moon is captivating from an almost zoo-like experience. Film at this point in time was a totally foreign thing, so first of all watching this massive scene with all these crazy bearded science fiction men strutting around on a crab planet was totally fitting with how ridiculous this all was. It was two dimensional, like theater, but filmed theater because that’s all you could do at the time with the camera. It showed early on what you can do with space in film, compositionally, specifically the shot of the cannon, pointing out to the moon. That’s probably the most notable image out of it. The story is thoroughly entertaining, probably more so than most movies today. It was quick, to the point, constantly had your attention based on how outlandish everything was. Was a spectacle, kind of like Avatar.
