#128 - Only Angels have Wings (1939)

August 22, 2018

This film is really gripping especially the flying sequences which is what the movie is known for. The storyline definitely hooks you in terms of providing a great addictive character trope that gets you to root for Cary Grant to shed his thrill-seeking ways but at the same time you also want him to get back out there and fly into danger for the thrill of the moment itself. You as the audience are kind of torn between wanting to save this character and also wanting to watch him fly as close to crashing and burning as possible. The effects are coming a long way in terms of what visuals can be presented in Hollywood. Some of the shots are so fully developed that you do not believe for a second this was shot in a studio and actually think the background is real and not rear screen projection.

Again like StageCoach we're seeing a progression to a macho man culture that is slowly developing and a more worldly view in cinema as the mid 20th century expansion occurs.
