This film is part of the western genre coming into its own alongside Stagecoach. We are also seeing the great actors of Hollywood emerging onto the scene, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, James Stewart, etc... There is really this solidification of star power and cult of celebrity becoming part of the national culture by the end of the 1930's.
Stars will begin to dictate content not the content itself.
This film is really good storytelling and makes great use of a star actor, Jimmy Stewart, especially playing a role that is the opposite of what you’d expect from him, a gunslinger. I will say I do not buy his relationship with Marlene Dietrich, she's too feisty a woman I think for Stewart to end up with. That being said their two dominant personality types allow for a very funny comedic tug of war to unfold between the two of them throughout the film.
Their back and forth power struggle is quite comical and comes off in a very entertaining way even if the chemistry is not believable.
